SPORTSMANSHIP
It is imperative that every player, coach, and staff member exercise outstanding sportsmanship this weekend. The weekend will involve competitive play on the court, but please make sure that the heat of competition does not affect your ability to act with proper sportsmanship and professionalism. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action by the tournament staff and may result in dismissal from the tournament. Referees will be instructed that any use of inappropriate language by either players or coaches will result in a technical foul. This will be non-negotiable. We are grateful to have hosted this tournament for so many years without many incidents; let’s continue the tradition.
- Game Time: Teams must be at their courts 15 minutes prior to game time. If a team cannot field the minimum number of players (5) within 5 minutes of the scheduled time of tip off, they will forfeit the game. The forfeiting team will have a loss recorded, with a -20 point differential factored into their overall point differential, while the other team will have a win and +20 point differential recorded. Each team will have a captain and/or coach sign the score sheet.
- Players: Games are 5-on-5, full-court, and are officiated. All teams must have numbered jerseys. Females may play on a male team, but males cannot play in the female bracket. A team must have 5 players to start the game. If, at any point after the game has started, a team can only field 4 players, whether it be to fouls or injuries, they are permitted to continue to play with 4 players. However, if a team cannot field a minimum of four players, the game will be terminated and the score at the time will be recorded.
- Clock: There will be two 20-minute halves per game. The first half clock will run continuously, with the exception of timeouts and injuries. The clock will also stop if the referee deems an excessive delay due to a loose ball. The second half will also have a running clock for the first 18 minutes, while the final 2 minutes will be run under normal IHSAA rules, stopping for fouls, possession changes, etc. There will be one 5-minute halftime.
- Overtime: If necessary, overtime periods will be 3 minutes. The first two minutes will be a continuous clock, while the last minute will be with a stopping clock.
- Timeouts: Each team will have 2 sixty-second timeouts per game and 1 more per overtime. Time-outs may be called by the coaches (if present) as well as the players. Timeouts will result in a clock stoppage.
- Fouls: Referees will enforce standard IHSAA foul rules. After a team’s seventh foul in a half, a one-and-one bonus situation will occur. After ten team fouls in a half, 2 free throws will be awarded to the opposing team. Each player is allowed five personal fouls before fouling out. There is no restricted area under the basket.
- Technical Fouls: Technical fouls result in 2 foul shots and the ball for the opposing team. 2 technical fouls for any player/coach will result in the ejection of that individual from the game and the next game. This applies to the team's bench as well. Note: All technical fouls will be reported to the tournament director as well as the Notre Dame cadre and may result in dismissal from the tournament for that year as well as the following year.
- No jewelry is permitted.
- All rulings of the referees, on the court, will stand. Everyone needs to respect the position of the officials. In addition, games will be clocked and scored by students with varying backgrounds in respect to basketball. It is expected that everyone, players and coaches alike, respect the scorers and work with them to make the game run more smoothly. Disrespecting the scorers or referees may be grounds for removal from a game or the tournament as a whole.
- Team Size: Teams may only dress 15 players for each game. All potential players need to be listed on the team roster. This team roster must be submitted before pool play begins or before a team’s first game. These 15 players listed on the roster will be the only players allowed to play on that team for the entire tournament.
- Mercy Rule: If at half-time or any time during the second half of a game one team is behind by 30 or more points, the game will be over. At this point, the captain and coach of each team, in addition to the scorers, will sign the score sheet and the score will be recorded. The point differential will only be recorded as ±20 points for determining overall seeding. If and only if the losing team and the winning team would like to continue playing, the game may continue, but the rest of the game will have a running clock. Any further scoring will not be recorded in the final results or used determining point differentials. Even if the losing team should come within less than 30 points, the clock will continue to run. If at any time, either team (if down by 30 points or more) decides to call off the game, they can. Teams will demonstrate sportsmanship in this event.
- Playoffs: The winner of each pool is automatically granted a spot in the playoff seeding. The remaining slots will be filled by Wild Card teams. Seeding order will be first decided by the number of wins vs losses, then by point differential capped at 20 points per game, and finally by total points scored. 16 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams will compete in the playoffs which will begin on Saturday evening.
- Eligibility: All players in the tournament must be students enrolled in ROTC during the academic year. A form will be signed by a cadre member verifying proof of eligibility. If you have any questions regarding the eligibility of one of your players, please ask the tournament staff before playing your first game. Violation of eligibility requirements is grounds for disqualification from the tournament.
- Scoring: Final scores will be recorded at the termination of the game (or when the Mercy Rule comes into effect, see Statement 11). The captain of each team and each of the scorers will sign the score sheet before turning it into HQ.
Enjoy the tournament and good luck to all teams!
